Sounds like the keys to surviving the ebb & flow for a new writer is:

1) Keep that part-time job
2) Stick a lot in a savings account for a rainy day (or month or quarter)
3) Marry rich

Yeah, that about covers it. In terms of savings, I've heard 3 months, 6 months, or a year. A year is practically impossible.

Marrying rich ain't a bad idea.

Some "alternate" form of income is a good idea. Multiple books with multiple publishers, or flipping burgers, or your dayjob, or writing nonfiction or... marrying rich.
